Set up your own server · Instructions checked 2026-10-17

1. Prepare Docker Engine 20.10 or newer and Docker Compose v2, with at least 2 GB RAM and 1 GB disk available for the local app.
2. Clone the official current Grimoire repository and open its directory. Keep the supplied Compose port mapping at 127.0.0.1:3210:3210.
3. Run docker compose up -d. The first run builds the image from the repository Dockerfile; later starts reuse that image.
4. Wait for http://127.0.0.1:3210/health to respond, then open http://127.0.0.1:3210 in your browser. Save a URL or import a browser bookmark export.
5. Use Settings to select optional AI and embedding providers only if wanted. Keep the grimoire-data volume and use the documented backup flow.

Core bookmarks and keyword search work without paid AI. Hosted provider APIs can charge separately; local Ollama inference needs your hardware. The app relies on a single-user loopback trust boundary and has no general public-server authentication. Keep it local; remote access needs an authenticated VPN, tunnel or proxy before traffic reaches Grimoire. Legacy 0.5 Docker examples describe a different application and should not be used for this 1.x setup.
