Gokapi

Set up your own server · Instructions checked 2026-10-16

1. Install Docker on the host and use the official stable docker.io/f0rc3/gokapi:latest image. The guide recommends the stable Docker route for most users.
2. Use the documented Docker run example with persistent volumes mounted at /app/data and /app/config. Keep its localhost-only 127.0.0.1:53842:53842 port mapping when using a reverse proxy.
3. Open http://localhost:53842/setup on the host and complete the setup wizard. Choose the default SQLite database and local storage for a basic installation, then create the initial administrator credentials and keep authentication enabled.
4. For access from other computers, configure the public-facing URL and an HTTPS reverse proxy using the guide. Decide storage and encryption settings before adding files.
5. Sign in through the administration interface, upload a file you want to share and set its download-count or time expiration. Copy the generated download link for the intended recipient.

You operate the server and its storage; S3-compatible storage is optional and can incur charges. Both data and config volumes must persist across container replacement. Production reverse proxies need the documented upload timeouts and request-size limits. Changing encryption settings deletes existing encrypted files, so choose those settings before storing important files. The documented encryption has not been independently audited.
