About Music Player Daemon

Run a music playback daemon for your own audio collection and control its library, outputs and queue through an MPD client. A self-hosting option is recorded for this project. Review the official deployment instructions and maintenance requirements before running it yourself.

Installation and setup

Set up your own server · Instructions checked 2026-10-24

  1. On Debian or Ubuntu, use the provider-documented mpd distribution package; its version may lag upstream. Read the current provider manual before choosing another Linux package.
  2. Review /etc/mpd.conf and set music_directory to a folder containing audio you are entitled to play. Confirm that the MPD service user can read it.
  3. Configure an available audio output and keep network access limited to the intended local machine or trusted network. A server process is separate from a listening application.
  4. Connect a compatible MPD client, update the music database and play one test album before adding the full collection. Preserve the configuration and a separate copy of your media.

Provider-source review only; no candidate code, installer or APK was executed.
